How do I Join IBL - What is required of me?
Students that want to do IBL must be enrolled in a full time undergraduate program and complete two and a half years of their degree.
You will need to refer to your course planner that will outline when to start IBL. Most programs require 237.5 credit points to be eligible for IBL (differs for Aviation Management and Photonics).
Please speak to your course administrator to discuss a suitable time for you to commence.
Once you have confirmed when to undertake IBL you will need to attend the IBL registration sessions held in March and September. March information sessions are for June / July placements and September sessions are for Dec/Jan placements.
Companies that want to participate in the program will need to complete a Position Description form. For further questions regarding the program please contact the IBL office.
It is important that companies ensure that the position description being advertised relates to the following streams of engineering: Aviation Management, Biomedical, Civil, Electronics and computer systems, Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, Robotics and Mechatronics, Photonics and Product Design.
If the position does not meet our streams we will contact you. Some positions are suitable for other faculties and we will forward the PD onto them. We want our students to get the best and most suitable industry experience possible and it is extremely important to the University that students receive relevant industry knowledge.

Other IBL guidelines to note:
- IBL positions must be full time, students cannot undertake units whilst on a placement.
- The workplace is suitable and employment is accurate with appropriate awards.
- Positions advertised through the IBL office must be engaged as Industry Based Learning placements only.
- Students that apply for IBL positions must be registered IBL students. Please confirm with the IBL Office.
Swinburne students are in demand and student placements are not guaranteed. To ensure your IBL position is filled and you get the most out of the program, the following are some key points to consider:
- Complete the Swinburne position description accurately using readable and not to lengthy text.
- Offer the IBL scholarship program which offers tax free money and company benefits.
- Consider offering a fee subsidy to students on the IBL program (please call the office to discuss)
- Offer a position that students can apply their theory to practice!
