Industry-Based Learning
What is Industry - Based Learning (IBL)?
Industry-Based Learning is a program offered at undergraduate level in which
students are offered the opportunity to undertake a full time paid placement
in industry for 6 or 12 months in an area relevant to their studies. Due to
Australian government regulations, the optional Industry-Based Learning is currently
not available to international students.

Why do IBL?
IBL gives students industry
experience ahead of any other graduate that have not taken IBL or any other
sort of Industry placement.
The program has been running for
over 40 years at Swinburne with many of Australia’s leading companies
offering places where you receive a tax free scholarship of up to $32,500 a
year! This can pay most of your HECS fees!

"Being
an IT student I didn't expect to get the chance to work in a factory but it
has been a fantastic experience and would recommend Nestle Peters Ice Cream
to anyone."
Daniel Ryland, 2006 IBL student
"Working for Nestle Peters Ice Cream was a fantastic opportunity! It has
opened many doors for my future career and I was immediately treated as part
of the time Engineering team with my own projects rather than just as a student."
Lakshitha Senewiratne,
2006 IBL Student (Mechanical)

"Industry-Based Learning (IBL) placement at Bosch Australia has been so
beneficial to my future career in Robotics as I have learnt about large scale
corporations and how engineering principles can be applied over many disciplines.
I have met lots of inspirational females in engineering and been given invaluable
advice on my own career path. The best thing for girls who are at school and
considering studying Engineering is to talk to women in the industry and build
from their experiences".
Daisy Stampfer

"In
my year of the Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program, I was placed at GM Holden
in experimental engineering, building prototype VE Commodores and WM Statesmens.
I was able to directly apply what I learnt in my studies and projects at Swinburne
to my job".
