The Global Tech Leaders Symposium (GTLS)

Sumit Mukherjee
(currently a 3rd year civil engineering student) travel to Singapore and Shanghai representing Swinburne in "The Global Tech Leaders Symposium (GTLS)".

"The Global Tech Leaders Symposium (GTLS), held jointly in Singapore and Shanghai this year between 12-20 March is considered one of the premier leadership events for tertiary students. The international extension of the globally renowned "Corporate Leaders Program" at Arizona State University, the GTLS is a
chance for students from around the world to meet top executives from multinational giants across various industry sectors, tour various facilities, develop a sense of social entrepreneurship associated with being a "leader" and thinking beyond the bottom line. Swinburne University is one of the major sponsors of the event. Sumit Mukherjee, currently a 3rd year Civil Engineering / Business Administration Student at Swinburne was one of the students representing the University at the event.

Swinburne Delegation at GTLSSingapore was the first stop for the GTLS delegation this year. Having prospered for the last 30 years economically Singapore considers itself unique. Many leading multinationals choose to set up their Asian offices in Singapore and use it as the interface to Asia. With a pleasant mix of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures Singapore's business objective is to become a "business hub with Asian values". The delegates of the GTLS had a chance to tour the engine overhaul and avionics facilities of Honeywell Asia, listen to a presentation by the Mr Gerry Oh, Vice-President of the Millennium Copthorne Group of Hotels and also a prominent player in the global domination of Singapore Airlines and visit Nanyang Institute of Technology. Moreover it was a chance for the students to put their "social entrepreneurship" skills into practice by part-taking in various projects on behalf of a number of prominent not for profit organisations in Singapore.

Shanghai is Asia's fastest growing and already quite astonishing city. With business infrastructure rivalling any city in the world, it is commonly quoted in Shanghai that at any given time 33% of the world's concrete is poured there. With China having opened its doors to foreign investment and collaboration with the west prominent industry giants like General Motors and Boeing have opened production and services facilities in Shanghai. The notable highlights for the GTLS delegation were visiting these facilities, taking a train ride on the Mag Lev (Magnetic Levitation) train with a top speed of 431 km/h and also dinner at Shanghai's most famous hotel, the Peace Hotel. Needless to say shopping was high on the priority list of many!!

The GLTS is a unique event in that it is a symposium that goes beyond sitting in lecture theatres listening to talks. Students have an opportunity not only to participate in various activities but also mingle amongst themselves and seek guidance from the various senior participants. One such is Ron Bengelink, recently retired Chief Global Engineer for Boeing. Many students chose to discuss their future hopes and aspirations with Ron and were also treated to a presentation by Ron on Globalisation and its effects on future generations.

The Symposium will be held again in Singapore and Shanghai next year. It is an opportunity that students, if possible, should grasp. Swinburne is an active participant in the event and if interested students should contact the Education Abroad office for more information or visit the Global Tech Leaders
Symposium website on http://www.i-clp.org/gtls."
