From 2009 the flying training for the Swinburne degree programs will be undertaken in Practicum blocks;

Private Pilot Licence Practicum
48 hours dual (including flight test) and 20 hours solo flight time consisting of a minimum of 34 sessions of general aircraft handling and 11 cross country flight exercises.

At the successful completion of Private Pilot Licence Practicum , students will have obtained an Australian Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane).

Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 1
35 hours dual instruction (including 5 hours aerobatics, 7 hours simulator and NVFR flight test) and 25 hours solo flight time Comprising Pilot in Command time, Night Visual Flight Rules (NVFR) training, cross country IFR training and Aerobatics

Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 2
31 hours dual (including 10 hours simulator and the CPL and CIR flight tests) and 25 hours solo flight time consisting of Pilot In Command (PIC) flight time, Endorsement training and Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) /CIR flying training.

At the successful completion of Private Pilot Licence Practicum, and both Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 1 & 2, students will have obtained an Australian Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane), endorsement for Night Visual Flight Rules (NVFR), endorsement for aerobatics, and single engine Command Instrument Rating.

In addition to obtaining Commercial Pilot Licence students can also undertake

Multi Crew Cooperation Practicum
Minimum of 30 hours Simulator. During this phase, an additional 28 hours minimum of pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered, plus at least 20 hours of Crew Resource Management training.

Multi Engine Gas Turbine Type Rating Practicum
17 hours dual flight instruction (including 6 hours simulator and flight test), consisting of simulator and aircraft flying.
At successful completion students will have obtained an endorsement for Multi Engine and a Gas Turbine Rating. Students having previously obtained a single engine command instrument rating in Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 2 will now have a Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating.

Flight Instructor Rating Practicum
A minimum of 30 hours practical flight instruction and a further 20 hours practice of airborne instructional techniques. The student will also require a minimum of 120 hours of ground based delivery to satisfactorily develop suitable instructional techniques for ground and flight training situations
At successful completion students will have obtained an Australian Class 3 Flight Instructor Rating.

Aircraft
Training is conducted at General Flying Services at Moorabbin Airport in new model, glass cockpit Cessna C172 and C182 aircraft as well as Kingair GTI, and Frasca simulators.
Aerobatics training is conducted in a Bellanca Decathalon.

Payment of Flying Training Fees
Students undertaking either the Associate Degree of Aviation or Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) must pay the Practicum unit fees to Swinburne. This is done through the enrolment process.
The above flying training Practicum unit fees are the expected fees for 2009.
Confirmation of Unit of Study Fees for 2009 will be available on the Swinburne Student Fees website from mid-August 2008

Students undertaking the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) concurrently with the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business must complete Private Pilot Licence Practicum, and both Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 1 & 2, and at least one of the elective practicums; either Multi Crew Cooperation Practicum, or Multi Engine Gas Turbine Type Rating Practicum, or Flight Instructor Rating Practicum.

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business, without the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) option are to pay the flying provider (General Flying Services) directly.

Further fees will apply if additional flight training hours are needed to obtain required standards or where increases in specific industry costs occur such as fuel, parts and CASA fees.

Students in Stage 3 (or Stage 4 for double degree with Business) may elect to undertake either the Multi Crew Cooperation Practicum, Multi Engine Gas Turbine Rating Practicum, or Flight Instructor Rating Practicum.

For students who enter the Bachelor degree mid year (July) the flying training commences Semester 1 (February) the following year, and payment follows the above schedule.

Financial Assistance for Flying Training
From 2009 eligible students undertaking the Associate Degree of Aviation, combined Bachelor of Aviation / Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) , and combined Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business / Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) will be able to access Commonwealth assistance for fees for both the academic units of study and flight training. HECS-HELP is available in the Bachelor Degree. FEE-HELP will be available in the Associate Degree of Aviation and Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting).

It is expected that any Australian citizen admitted into the above programs will be eligible for HECS-HELP (Bachelor degree) and FEE-HELP (Associate Degree and Graduate Certificate).
To be eligible for HECS-HELP you must be either an Australian citizen, A New Zealand citizen who is resident in Australia for the duration of the units studied, or a holder of a permanent visa who is resident in Australia for the duration of the units studied.
Australian Permanent Residents and New Zealand citizens are not eligible for FEE-HELP.
A maximum lifetime FEE-HELP limit applies; in 2009 the FEE-HELP limit was $83,313. As the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) is a postgraduate program there is no FEE-HELP loan fee.

Please note that from 2009 enrolment in the Associate Degree of Aviation is only available in Employer Reserved Places to applicants undertaking an airline cadet pilot program.
