About Us
The Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences is host to most of the engineering activities at Swinburne as well as key programs in aviation and photonics. Faculty boundaries matter little in the delivery of our courses or research, since Swinburne is devoted to maximising the opportunities available for students and staff across the campus and beyond. The Faculty operates as an administration unit within the University and thus is home to over 2300 undergraduates and postgraduates on taught course and research programs, and over 150 academic, administration, research and technical staff at the Hawthorn campus. Many of our programs are also delivered by colleagues at the Sarawak campus, with whom close collaborations continue to be developed. Effective pathways exist for articulating between TAFE and our programs. A distinguishing feature of the programs at Swinburne is the expectation that students will undertake 6-12 months of industrial work experience during their studies. This Industry Based Learning creates graduates that are 'job ready' and provides students with a valuable source of income. Due to Australian government regulations, optional Industry-Based Learning is currently not available to international students.
Within the Faculty, much of the research is hosted in four centres: Centre for Atom Optics
and Ultra-fast Spectroscopy (CAOUS), Centre for Micro-Photonics (CMP), Centre for Sustainable Infrastructure (CSI) and Industrial Research Institute Swinburne (IRIS). In addition to these, there are individual research efforts as well as collaborations with research groups based further afield. Much of our research continues the Swinburne tradition of being directly relevant to industry, providing practical solutions to help companies be more competitive. However, we continue to develop the underpinning science that is needed for the next generation of research solutions, thus completing the flow from innovative idea to competitive gain.
All our teaching and research is informed by international activities, either indirectly in terms of the standards to which we measure ourselves, or directly with exchanges and cooperations. Students and research staff want the Swinburne experience to help them make a great stride in their career. The Faculty is here to enhance that experience and maximise their career and personal gains.
These web pages provide a starting place for those seeking information on Swinburne as a place to study, work or source solutions. Please contact us when you want to know more.
