Swinburne's annual Breakfast at NGV is back for its 23rd year and this edition doesn't disappoint! Featuring a balanced juxtaposition of the ancient with the contemporary, this season of winter masterpieces welcomes some of China's best art and cultural examples.
Not seen in Victoria since 1982, Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality brings Shaanxi province to the heart of Melbourne with eight warrior figures and two life-size horses from the Imperial Army, as well as two half-size replica bronze chariots, each drawn by four horses. These treasures will be accompanied by 150 exquisite ancient gold, jade and bronze artefacts from the dynasties of the Western Zhou through to the Han (1046 BC – 220AD).
Accompanying the Warriors will be world exclusive new pieces from one of China's best contemporary artists in Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape. Inspired by Chinese culture and traditions, Cai Guo-Qiang is well known for his spectacular use of gunpowder in his works. Expect to be blown away by monumental porcelain installations as he combines tradition and history and tension and contrast to create a unique dialogue within contemporary art.
