Study Abroad - How to Apply

Swinburne University of Technology is committed to encouraging student mobility. The experience of studying and living overseas means you can explore the world while gaining academic credit.

The International Exchange Program offers you the opportunity to study at an overseas institution for a semester or a full year. You will receive credit towards your Swinburne degree by studying units approved by your Academics and Faculty Administrator.

    FBE specific Study Abroad process information - for FEIS students undertaking a double degree with a Bachelor of Commerce

The program is designed for both Local, International, Postgraduate and Undergraduate students.
To be eligible to participate in the Swinburne Study Abroad program a student must
  • have completed at least One Year as a swinburne student,
  • have a creadit average, (65%).
  • not be an AusAID funded student
Individual universities may have additional eligibilty requirements.

There are limited places at some partner institutions and students undertaking double degrees may wish to study at an alternate partner institutions.
It is important that you consult your Swinburne Abroad Adviser to determine your eligibility for a particular host university and to assist in determining the best options for you.



Determining where you can go on International Exchange depends on your discipline of study and the units you require during the intended semester of exchange.

How do I know what a full-time study load is at my host institution?




Once you've got subject information about classes, you need to make an appointment to see your unit convenor or program coordinator.

You need to take details of the subjects you have selected for approval, and once approval has been granted you need to meet with your School/Divisional Administrator for further approval.

Any Swinburne academic can complete the Academic Reference Form as long as they have taught you within your current Swinburne program.
Write Your Personal Statement
It is up to you what you include in your personal statement but we recommend you include your motivation for applying for Exchange, your reasons for choosing your host institution/country and what you expect to achieve while on Exchange.




Please ensure you provide all necessary information on the application form and attach all required supporting documents, if your application form is incomplete or missing any supporting documents, your application will be held pending.

If Swinburne Abroad does not approve your application, we will contact you to explain the reasons behind the decision. You may be invited to apply again for the following semester.

Letter of Offer
Once Swinburne Abroad completes assessment of your exchange application, an official offer letter will be sent to you via email. To accept your offer, you need to read the information included in your official offer letter. You then need to sign the forms, complete the host institution’s application form/s and return them to Swinburne Abroad by the due date stated in your offer letter.
Host Institution’s acceptance
It can take up to two to three months to receive your official acceptance notification from your host institution. Once you receive official acceptance letter, it is your responsibility to return any documentation directly to your host institution.




You are responsible for making the necessary travel and accomodation bookings, researching visa regulations, etc.

Swinburne Abroad will advise you on these matters where possible, and organises pre-departure sessions to inform you on matters relating to your exchange program. Swinburne Abroad applications ...
