PhD Research Area

Topic:

Composite Sandwich Panels – Deformation and Energy Absorption

Objective:

Composite sandwich panels are widely used in marine, aerospace, and automotive industries for their excellent mechanical attributes: outstanding strength to weight ratio and superior bending stiffness.

Optimising these combinations for high strength, energy absorption and low weight are key requirements to meeting the performance criteria for future automotive projects and automobile crashworthiness.

Research involves the use of sandwich structures made from composite skin sheets and aluminium foam core combinations. Systematic research is being conducted into the structural response and energy absorbing performance of these sandwich structures under quasi-static and impact loadings.
