Dr. Pio Iovenitti has 14 years industry experience in the appliance industry where he was involved in design, project management, and R&D. He joined Swinburne University of Technology in 1987, and has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students CAD/CAM/CAE and advanced technology. He has conducted research in MEMS and Microfluidics since 1999, and was project leader of the microfluidics project in the CRC for Microtechnology. He has been involved industry–based research since 1989, three CRCs since 1995, and awarded 13 ARC and industry funded research grants. He has supervised 15 Masters and PhD students by research to completion, over 100 coursework Masters students and undergraduate final year student projects. Published 92 journal, conference and articles, and contributed to three patents, and is a member of the SPIE since 1995.

- Caliper for measuring thickness of marine engine propeller blades;
- Polymeric building blocks from recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic;
- Intelligent flexible mandrel for box forming;
- Improving efficiency of sorting techniques for separating recycled plastics;
- Optimising part orientation in FDM rapid prototyping process;
- Regenerative electromagnetic suspension system for energy recovery and storage;
- Inspection system for detecting defects in packaging and seals;
- Optimised layout of obstacles for enhanced mixing in microchannels;
- CAD/CAM software for excimer laser micromachining microstructures on polymers.
- Development of instrument for optimum tunnel location and drilling for ACL surgery;
- Ultrasonic inspection of sub–surface defects in die–castings.

- Facial impact protection for cyclists;
- Design and fabrication of a microphone using MEMS technology;
- Design and fabrication of a nanospray device for ESI–MS;
- Capacitive and ultrasonic fuel level sensors development in automotive applications;
