Associate Professor Kerry McManus has been involved in the education of Engineers at tertiary level for almost forty years, mainly spent at Swinburne University of Technology. He has also had appointments at the University of Queensland, Loughborough University of Technology, UK and Louisiana State University , Baton Rouge, USA. as a Visiting Professor He is now retired from full time service and has been appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Swinburne. Prior to his retirement, he held the position of Deputy Head of the School of Engineering and Science. He has taught in the undergraduate and postgraduate course work programs. and has been involved in supervising research degrees.
Both his research and teaching excellence have been recognised by Swinburne. He was awarded the inaugural Research Excellence Award and Medal in 1999. The Teaching Excellence Award for 1995 was granted to him by the Division of Science, Engineering and Design of Swinburne University of Technology. He and his co-authors were given the ARRB Transport Research Prize in 1996 for Best Paper on research into practice at the 18th ARRB Transport Research Conference & Transit NZ Transport Symposium - Roads 96, held in Christchurch NZ. In 2008, he was invited to present a paper to the Oxford Round Table dealing with sustainability.
He has successfully supervised nineteen postgraduate research degrees and is currently looking after another seven candidates. Funds for research have been generated from both industrial and competitive grant sources, by him, to the extent of $2.25 million. An outcome of the research has been the production two book chapters and of over one hundred and forty papers published in refereed journals and conferences. He holds an Australian patent with a colleague for Sound Barriers made of recycled material. He acts as a reviewer of papers for a number of journals and international conferences.
As an academic administrator, he has held appointments as Deputy Head of the School of Engineering and Science, Head of Civil Engineering and Director of a Research Group. He was also Director of the postgraduate Construction Management program which he began at Swinburne. This program has now been running successfully for thirty years.
He continues to serve on international and national committees related to his interests. He has been an international member of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies Committee on Waste Management and Resources Efficiency in Transportation (ADC-60), USA, since 2004. The National Centre for Pavement Engineering Education has utilised his services as a Board Member since 2000 and he chairs their Academic Board. He has served on the Editorial Board of a number of international conferences particularly in the field of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Computing. He is a former State Chairman of Engineers Australia and has served on National Congress. He also was a Board Member of the State Committee of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Australia.
He served in the Army Reserve for over thirty years ending his career with the rank of Brigadier. He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to the Army in.1991. He also holds the Reserve Force Decoration (RFD). He was also awarded the National Medal and the Defence Medal.
