Swinburne Scholarships

The Doctor of Philosophy and Masters by Engineering or Science degrees have a number of scholarships available to both international and domestic students wishing to undertake a full time placement at Swinburne.

Below you will find brief descriptions of the major scholarships available to students wishing to study at Swinburne. Full information regarding eligibility, payments and entitlements can be found by downloading each scholarships individual guide, where available.
  • Chancellor's Research Scholarship (CRS)
    The Swinburne University Chancellor's Research Scholarship (CRS) is the University's premier research award. They are awarded to students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research (HDR). The successful applicants will become members of a research team working under the direction of senior researchers.

    The awards provide an annual stipend of $30,000, an Establishment Grant of up to $3,000 and up to $5000 for a 6 month overseas placement in a collaborating laboratory or organisation nominated by Swinburne. This overseas placement is a condition of the award. The scholarship also covers tuition fees.

    CRS' are open to all research doctorate applicants - international and Australian and New Zealand citizens however only two are awarded each year

  • Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Award (SUPRA)
    Swinburne University Vice Chancellor's Research Scholarship (VCRS)

    Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Awards (SUPRAs) and Swinburne University Vice Chancellor's Research Scholarship (VCRSs) are awarded to students of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research (HDR). The awards are provided to assist with general living costs. Tuition fees are also covered by the award.

    The awards provide an annual stipend of $20,427 ($22,500 in 2010) and are open to all research doctorate applicants - international and Australian and New Zealand citizens. Up to 40 awards are available each year.

  • Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)
    Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs) are awarded to students of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research (HDR). The scholarships are provided to assist with general living costs. Tuition fees are also covered by the award.

    The awards provide an annual stipend of $20,427 ($22,500 in 2010) and are open to Australian and New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents. Up to 20 awards are available each year.

  • International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)
    The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) program was established to maintain and develop international research linkages and specifically aims to attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas of research strength in the Australian higher education sector and support Australia's research effort.

    The International Postgraduate Research Award (IPRS) is awarded to an international student (except New Zealanders) of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research (HDR). The award covers tuition costs and the cost of Overseas Student Health Cover. No living allowance is provided.

  • Tuition Fee Scholarship
    The Tuition Fee Scholarship offers a tuition fee exemption (valued at $20,000 p.a.) for up to four years for doctoral studies and two years for Masters by research. This scholarship is open to both local and international students.

    Students are automatically considered for this scholarship as part of the application for candidature process.
