Application Checklist

Our checklist gives a brief summary of important steps and documentation that must be included in your application. It should not be seen as a replacement to thorough reading of course, scholarship and application procedure.

  • Determine your area of research interest
Review the projects & PhD topics available through the individual Research Centres or on the PhD Research Topics page to determine a research area you are comfortable with and contact the nominated supervisor to discuss details about the project and potential supervision.
Discussion allows you to express any ideas about your vision for the project, and without agreement of the supervisors your application will not be able to proceed.

If you have a specific research area that does not appear to be represented you should contact the Associate Dean (Research) Prof. Ajay Kapoor for advice & assistance.

  • Review course, scholarship and application requirements through the Swinburne Research Higher Degrees website and above information.
All courses and scholarships have different eligibility criteria for local and international students.
Failure to meet these criteria will be detrimental to your application.
Important information regarding fees, entitlements and examination is also available.
This page is intended as a short guide but we strongly recommend reviewing the information provided directly by Swinburne Research.

The following masters and doctorate degrees are available through the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences.
Courses are identical for both local an international students, however due to potential differences in eligibility, fees and scholarships the course information has been separated.

A full listing of our degrees can be found through the Swinburne Research website. Please note that stipend scholarships are not available to Masters by Research students

  • Fill out the appropriate application forms
Application forms differ for local and international students. Ensure you fill out all the appropriate forms and ensure you follow any instructions within them.

Applications for research higher degrees are not processed directly by the Faculty but must be obtained from and returned to Swinburne Research. Detailed information regarding the application process can be obtained from the Postgraduate Research Studies website.

Application forms differ for local and international students and can be found through the following links.
To ensure a simple application process, read the application forms and Swinburne Research thoroughly before submitting any documentation. A number of supporting documents must be presented along with the applications depending on each applicants current situation. Ensure these documents are appropriately verified and sent to and from the appropriate people. Referee report forms are to be sent directly to Swinburne by the referee and not the applicant.

The Research Higher Degrees Committee, responsible for the application process will only consider those applications that are supported by a supervisor and Faculty.

You should consult with your proposed supervisor(s) prior to completing these forms to ensure a research position is available in that area. Supervisors and their project can be found in our Research Centres listings or on the PhD Research Topics page and students are encouraged to discuss both the current research activity within the project and any particular area they are interested in within the project scope.

  • Obtain and verify copies of any required supporting documentation
Various pieces of documentation are required to prove your identity and qualifications. Each form will list the necessary documentation you must provide and you are to ensure the copies you supply have been verified as true copies of the originals.
  • Return forms and documentation to appropriate addresses
Application forms are to be returned to the address stated on the forms, and not to the faculty administrators.
The Referee Report forms are to be sent by the referee directly to the address listed on the form and should NOT be included with the applicants application form.
  • Monitor your correspondence for both confirmation of application and notification of application approval
Swinburne will notify you when both your application has been received, and when a decision has been made. Ensure you follow up on the forms if you receive no notification within a reasonable amount of time after the deadlines.
