Swinburne Project Teams win commercialization awards at 2010 CAST CRC annual conference

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

The CAST commercialization award is to recognise a project’s team achievements leading to the stage of CAST CRC entering into a licence agreement for commercialization of a technology, this year CAST conferred two awards for “Laser Assisted Riveting” and
“LMcut” - the laser assisted machining technology, both developed within projects led by
Swinburne researchers.

Laser assisted riveting, developed within CAST project "Joining of Light Metals" with
current project leader Dr. Yvonne Durandet (Research Engineer in IRIS), enables the
riveting of magnesium alloys with the application of a laser to heat the materials prior to
the riveting process to prevent cracking of magnesium during joining. A patent application
has been submitted to protect this IP. The main CAST participants to the project include
Swinburne University of Technology, Deakin University, Central Queensland University,
Henrob (UK) Pty Ltd and Henkel Australia Pty Ltd as industry partners. The technology
has been exclusively licensed to Henrob.

LMcut - is CAST's technology relating to core research project “Laser assisted machining
of titanium alloys” currently led by Dr. Shoujin Sun (Research Engineer in IRIS) and
industrial application project "Laser assisted milling and machining" led by Mr. Jim Arthur
(CAST CRC). A laser pre-heating the work piece in front of the cutting tool enables titanium
alloys to be machined as easily as aluminium alloys, about 30% reduction in machining
cycle time has been achieved compared with the optimized conventional machining
procedure. The CAST partners that developed of the LM-cut technology are: Swinburne
University, University of Queensland, RMIT University, Ferra Engineering, Lockheed
Martin and Department of Defence. Lockheed Martin has a non-exclusive licence to the
technology.

In addition to the projects, the individual team members from Swinburne associated with
the projects were also acknowledged, these include: Dr. Yvonne Durandet, Dr. Shoujin
Sun, Mr. Jim Arthur, Dr. William Song, Mr. Gary Owen, Mr. Brian Dempster, Mr. Girish
Thipperudrappa, Mr. Andrew Moore and other past Swinburne researchers associated with
the projects. CAST CRC media release.
