Introduction

Impact Behaviour of Materials and Structures (IBMS) at Swinburne University of Technology is arguably Australia's leading research group for studying the behavior of innovative materials and structures under dynamic/impact loadings. IBMS has established its reputation based on its world class material and structural testing facilities and its creative researchers. It provides material and structural testing services to other researchers and innovative solutions to industry. Research is focused on investigating energy absorption of light-weight materials and structures, exploring new paradigms for material and structural behaviour, and exploiting optimal design for novel structures under various loadings.

Swinburne University of Technology has a wide range of facilities for measuring the behavior of materials and structures under a variety of loading conditions. The facilities include a hydraulic MTS, a drop-weight testing system, two sets of split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) testing system, a one-stage gas gun and a high-rate INSTRON 8800 test machine (this machine is the only one in Australia and New Zealand). These facilities provide material testing spanning the strain rate range of 10-5 to 104 s-1.
