Professor David Moss named 2018 SPIE Fellow

Professor David Moss has been named an SPIE (the international society for optics and photonics) Fellow. He is being recognized for: "achievements in CMP compatible photonic chips for integrated nonlinear optics."

The honour was conferred at the SPIE Fellows Lunch at Photonics West, San Francisco, on January 29, 2018.
Prof. Moss has pioneered research on CMOS compatible platforms for nonlinear optics, work that has been widely recognized as opening up the new field of on-chip microresonator frequency combs sources, which will have profound implications for many fields, from telecommunications to optical interconnects, and including metrology, sensing, spectroscopy, and many others. He has also pioneered the use of slow light in photonic crystals to enhance nonlinear interactions for all-optical devices.

As a member of SPIE for much of the past 35 years, Moss has made extensive contributions to the Society. He has been involved in many SPIE conferences, including serving as general conference chair of SPIE Nanophotonics Australasia, Melbourne, in December 2017. He has given many talks at SPIE conferences, particularly at Photonics West in San Francisco.

Professor Moss has a 35-year career in research in academia, industry and government research laboratories in Canada, Japan and Australia and is presently the Director of the Centre for Micro-Photonics at Swinburne University in Hawthorn, Victoria. He was with the University of Sydney for over 15 years, the last 10 of which were with the ARC Centre of Excellence CUDOS. David still holds an honorary Professorial Fellow position with the University of Sydney. Professor Moss has over 600 publications including numerous articles in Nature, Science, and Nature family journals and conference papers with around 8000 citations and an h-index over 50 (GS). He is leading extensive international research networks in nanophotonics and other areas. David has won a number of notable awards for his research including the 2011 Australian Museum Award and the Google Eureka Science Prize for Innovation. David is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the IEEE, and SPIE.

Each year, SPIE promotes members as new Fellows of the Society that have achieved an outstanding record of accomplishment in any of the SPIE fields of interest. SPIE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honour and an important career achievement. Fellows are Members of distinction who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. They are honored for their technical achievement, for their service to the general optics community, and to SPIE in particular. More than 1,300 SPIE members have become Fellows since the Society's inception in 1955.
