Self-Trapped Optical Beams: Spatial Optical Solitons

Prof Yuri Kivshar

Nonlinear Physics Group, RSPhysSE, Australian National University

3.30pm, Friday 24 August 2001, Seminar Room (AR103), Graduate Research School

This talk will overview the topic of spatial optical solitons, self-trapped beams that can propagate in a nonlinear bulk medium without a change of their profile. Several types of such objects (including both the theory and experiment) will be discussed, such as bright and dark solitons, optical vortices, multipole composite and vector solitons.

Some more recent example of self-trapping in nonlinear photonic crystals will be mentioned as well.
