Optical Fibre Sensors

David Booth is recognised as one of Australia's foremost experts in the fibre optic sensor field and has an excellent international reputation. He and Alex Mazzolini have had a long-standing collaboration in fibre optics. Since joining CIAO (now part of CAOUS) in 2001, Paul Stoddart has initiated a new area of research in chemical sensing, taking advantage of novel techniques in nanotechnology and innovative sensing methods. He also led the Distributed Temperature Sensor Project, which was supported by the CRC for Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and Technologies.

We are interested in investigating research opportunities in the following main areas:
Optical Methods of Chemical Sensing
Fibre Optic Distributed Temperature Sensor
Optical Fibre Distributed Corrosion Sensor

Past work has involved the development of a fibre optic respiratory plethysmograph (FORP) for the characterisation of high frequency ventilation in neo-nates and the detection of sleep apnoea events in adults. This work is continuing in collaboration with the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.
