2012 Flying Training Practicum Unit Summaries, Fees and Payment Details

Program

From 2012 Swinburne University of Technology in cooperation with Oxford Aviation Academy (OAA) will be offering the Airline Preparation Program (APP) First Officer.

The APPFO program incorporates a Commercial Pilot Licence, Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating, aerobatics, Multi Crew Cooperation and Jet Orientation Course and frozen ATPL.

This innovative flying training program has been designed to prepare graduates to move directly into regular public transport aircraft endorsement training or general aviation.

Aircraft

Training is conducted at Oxford Aviation Academy at Moorabbin Airport in new model, glass cockpit Cessna C172 aircraft as well as PA-44 Piper Seminole multi engine aircraft, and Mechatronics and Frasca simulators. Aerobatics training is conducted in a Bellanca Decathalon.

Fee Increases

Flying Training is competency based and the Flying Training Practicum unit fees are based on minimum hours to both achieve competency and meet the regulatory licencing requirements.

Increases in fees will apply if additional flight training hours are needed to obtain the required competenciesstandards or where increases in specific industry costs occur such as fuel, parts and CASA fees


Practicum Units.

The flying training for the Swinburne degree programs is undertaken in Practicum units.

HES1950 Private Pilot Licence Practicum
38 hours dual (including flight test) and 10 hours solo flight time consisting of a minimum of 40 sessions of general aircraft handling and cross country flight exercises.

At the successful completion of HES1950 Private Pilot Licence Practicum , students will have obtained an Australian Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane).

HES1955 Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 1
15 hours dual instruction, 40 hours solo flight time and 4 hours of simulator instruction. Comprising Pilot in Command time, night circuit training, day and night cross-country IFR training and aerobatics / upset recovery. 12 hours pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered for the flying and simulator sequences

HES2950 Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 2
35 hours dual flight instruction, 20 hours of solo flight time, and 20 hours of simulator instruction. Comprising Pilot in Command, Multi Engine Endorsement training, Instrument Flight and Commercial flight training. 6 hours Flight Tests (Command Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot Licence). 20 hours pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered for the flying and simulator sequences

HES4950A Multi Crew Cooperation and Jet Orientation Course Practicum
36 hours Simulator training in the Multi Crew environment comprised of 4 general air work multi crew exercises and 5 Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT) sequences. During this phase, an additional 20 hours minimum of pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered, plus 24 hours of Crew Resource Management training.

At the successful completion of HES1950 Private Pilot Licence Practicum, and both HES1955 Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 1 & HES2950 Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 2, and HES4950A Multi Crew Cooperation and Jet Orientation Course Practicum students will have obtained an Australian Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane), endorsement for basic aerobatics, and Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating, as well as completing a Multi Crew Cooperation and Jet Orientation Course to meet the proposed CASA Civil Aviation Regulation Part 61 for multi crew and human factors competencies for Flight Crew Licence holders.

Additional Flying Hours

Further Fees will apply if additional flying hours are required

If students are unable to obtain required competencies, then additional flying training can be arranged through Oxford Aviation Academy or additional practicum units can be undertaken as part of the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting).

HES1951 Private Pilot Licence Additional Practicum
A minimum of 3 hours dual cross country flight exercise as well as 1½ hours pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered for this exercise.
At the successful completion of this unit of study, students will attain a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane).

HES2951 Commercial Pilot Licence Additional Practicum
A minimum of 3 hours dual flight instruction and 3 hours flight test. During this phase, an additional 3 hours pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered. Additionally the student will require at least 5 hours for flight planning and pre-flight preparation for cross country sequences.
At the successful completion of this unit of study, students will attain a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Commercial Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) and a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Single-Engine Command Instrument Rating.

HES4951 Multi Crew Cooperation Additional Practicum
Minimum of 3 hours Simulator. During this phase, an additional pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered, plus at least 2 hours of Crew Resource Management training. Additionally the student will require at least 2 hours for flight planning for Line Orientated Flight Training (LOFT) sequences.
The training emphasises the development of non technical skills applicable to working in a multi crew environment.

Payment of Flying Training Fees

Confirmation of all Unit of Study Fees is available on the Swinburne Student Fees website.

Students undertaking either the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) must pay the Practicum unit fees to Swinburne, this is done through the enrolment process.

Students undertaking M055N Bachelor of Aviation or EAC050N Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Commerce, without the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) option are to pay the flying provider (Oxford Aviation Academy) directly.

The flying training Practicum unit fees listed above are for Semester 1, 2012.

Students undertaking the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) concurrently with the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Commerce must complete the 4 prescribed practicum units. HES1950 Private Pilot Licence Practicum, HES1955 Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 1, HES2950 Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 2, HES4950A Multi Crew Cooperation and Jet Orientation Course Practicum, or HES4953 Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating Practicum.

Students in Stage 3 (or Stage 4 for double degree with Commerce) undertake HES4950A HES4950A Multi Crew Cooperation and Jet Orientation Course Practicum.

Associate Degree of Aviation

The Associate Degree of Aviation is provided exclusively for airline cadet pilot training. Full details of program structure and unit fees can be found at the Cadet Pilot Training page.

Financial Assistance for Flying Training

Eligible students undertaking the Associate Degree of Aviation, combined Bachelor of Aviation / Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) , and combined Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Commerce / Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) will be able to access Commonwealth assistance for fees for both the academic units of study and flight training. HECS-HELP is available in the Bachelor Degree. FEE-HELP is available in the Associate Degree of Aviation and Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting).

It is expected that any Australian citizen admitted into the above programs will be eligible for HECS-HELP (Bachelor degree) and FEE-HELP (Associate Degree and Graduate Certificate).

To be eligible for HECS-HELP you must be either an Australian citizen, A New Zealand citizen who is resident in Australia for the duration of the units studied, or a holder of a permanent visa who is resident in Australia for the duration of the units studied.

Australian Permanent Residents and New Zealand citizens are not eligible for FEE-HELP.

A maximum lifetime FEE-HELP limit applies; in 2012 the FEE-HELP limit is $89,706.
As the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) is a postgraduate program there is no FEE-HELP loan fee.

The Associate Degree of Aviation incurs a 25% FEE-HELP loan fee. The FEE-HELP loan limit does not include the loan fee.
