CASA SMS Requirements

casaCMSrequirements
ref. ICAO Safety Management Manual (SMM) 2nd edtn 2009

With the introduction of Safety Management System (SMS) as CAAPs SMS-1(0), SMS-2(0), SMS-3(0), and amendments to CAO 82.5, CASA will now require Air Operator Certificate (AOC) holders and other operational organisations that require a CASA delegation, to more comprehensively account for the human and organisational elements of safety within their operations.

The Swinburne Professional Certificate of Aviation has been designed specifically to help meet the needs of individuals and organisations in achieving these aims.

The Professional Certificate is a 2 unit distance education program.
  • The first unit addresses the core topics that have been recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
  • The second unit introduces students to the field of organisational safety within High Reliability Organisations.

The program specifically addresses the requirements of of the above CAAPS and therefore has an aviation theme, however the theoretical and practical aspects can be applied to individuals who work in other safety critical industries such as rail, marine and medicine. This course of study has also been designed for individuals who may be new to tertiary study or perhaps returning to university after a long absence. Units are undertaken by distance education and students are required to have internet access as materials and assessment are provided on-line.

Applicants would normally be university graduates with a bachelor degree or have undertaken a specific vocational program in safety such as the CASA Diploma of Aviation Safety Regulation. Alternatively consideration will also be given to applicants who have completed at least two years´ experience in an operational environment.

Applications from individuals who do not have such experience will be assessed on their merits.
