SEO Tips

These quick SEO tips can have a dramatic impact on the amount of traffic coming to your website.  After implementing them at the Faculty of Design, we saw a 500% increase in traffic in a matter of months.  If you are unsure how to implement them, do a quick google search for more detail.  If you have any code snippets or useful links, please post them in the comments box down the bottom.

Include keywords in page titles. Put keywords at start but make sure it is still readable.  This becomes the clickable link in the search results, so a comma separated list of keywords will not look very appealing to potential visitors.

Include keywords in domain name if possible

Include keywords in file and image names.

Eg

Use keywords in META tags but make sure the description is still readable.  Google ignores the META tags when calculating rank but still displays the description in the search results.

Create unique meta descriptions and meta keywords for each page.

Include keywords in your content text – especially headings.  Around 5% of your content should be your target keywords.

Redirect non-www URLs to the www equivalent.

Redirect index.php and index.html files to the directory that contains them.

Create a dynamic sitemap that automatically displays correctly for both the google and yahoo bots.

Include social bookmark buttons to makes it easy for visitors to share your content.

Move javascript to bottom of page when possible.

Submit site to google and dmoz directory

http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

http://www.dmoz.org/

When linking to a folder, always include the / at the end to ensure consistency.

Inbound links.  Lots of them.  Google counts every one as a vote that someone loves you.

Use tricks to move content markup to higher in the pages (ie before all the navigation code).

Allow visitor comments when appropriate.  This can help keep your content fresh and make it appear as though your website is updated regularly.

Add / update content regularly.

Create Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools accounts to help monitor website performance.

Add alt attributes to image tags.

Include keywords in linked text.

Add abbr tag to all abbreviations.
