Knowledge Review and finding the research gap

Author: Dr Simon Jackson

Doing Research into Design involves making a contribution to the existing knowledge in the field. In short, what makes your idea (or product, service or system) a new contribution? We determine this by doing a literature review - or more specifically, a knowledge review. The knowledge review has 2 forms: Literature review - used by all researchers and the Artefact review - much neglected by researchers. We visual researchers are the leaders in this area! An example is given using a poster from a well known museum devoted to exploring the chair as an artefact. PETSE and SWOT analyses are conducted as an example of but two ways of analysing both visual and text-based data. Once you have analysed some readings around your general area, a specific opportunity will arise. Often an article will end with the line : "Further research is needed in..." This is a Research gap - it is your most important task.

This is a tremendously interesting resource on a number of levels. Is there any way of saving it to my hard drive?
