Using Roxio Toast 6 Titanium on a mac to burn a cross platform cd, start up the application and click on the Data Tab and then on the Disc Settings icon.

On the left hand menu that slides out, click on the Basic settings at the top and make sure that you have the Mac & PC operating systems selected as we are making a cross platform cd.

Insert a blank cd into your cd drive and click the New Disc icon at the base of the data content area.

To add your files (with the data tab selected), click the Add icon at the base of the data content area to browse your hard disk for files or folders.

You can also select and drag files and folders into the data content area from any location on your hard drive.

Your content area should look something like this

All that is left is to hit the Record button at the lower right hand side of the screen and you have created a cross platform cd. Toast will display a progress bar as it burns your data to disc and may ask you to verify your disk to check the contents of the disc against the original data to ensure that your recording was successful.

Temporary partitions

Temporary partitions are useful in controlling the layout of your data and for creating custom hybrid disks. Why would you want to do this? Creating partitions enable you to hide Mac files from Pc users and Pc files from Mac users. Files used for both operating systems get written once and are able to share data across both systems so that you are not writing duplicate data files and can allow for more data to be written to your cd.

To create a temporary partition using Roxio Toast 6 Titanium on a mac go to Utitlities/Create Temporary Partition on the menu above. In the partition dialog box give your partition a name and an appropriate size for the amount of data you wish to write to your cd. Next to On: select your hard drive or network folder where you would like to create your partition (you may have to have administration rights to the computer you are using). When selecting a format for your partition choose Mac OS Standard for now to use the partition to record a disc that is usable on any Macintosh computer and click ok.

Create Temporary Partition

Now you can add all your Mac files to the newly created partition including the files and folders you want both the Macintosh and ISO PC's to read. These files will only be written once to your cd as they will be shared across both operating systems, we will call them our "shared data files". Be careful in the arrangement of your data as the structure of your files will be copied exactly to the Mac part of your hybrid cd including window sizes, positions and view menu settings all of which will be visible to Mac users.

Custom hybrid cds

Once you have created a temporary partition for your mac data files we are well on the way to creating a custom hybrid cd. Custom hybrid cd's allow you to deliver software created for both platforms on a single cd. Please make sure you have created a temporary partition before continuing.

With the Data Tab selected click the Disc Settings icon

Disc Settings

On the left hand menu that slides out, click on Advanced and then select Custom Hybrid

Disc Settings

As we have already prepared our mac files which includes our "shared data files" (see temporary partitions) we can add them by clicking on Select Mac. In the volume dialog box select the mac partition you created earlier and hit ok.

select volume

To add Pc files click Select ISO. In the ISO window add your files or folder by dragging them form anywhere on your system. You can also click on add and browse for your files. Once you have located them select your files or folder and click choose. The files that you have just added will only be visible to Pc users.

In the ISO 9660 window, click the Settings tab. Next to Naming: choose Joliet. From my experience I have always left Append Version Numbers and Use Apple Extensions unchecked to allow for an auto start function on a Pc and click done.

Your data content area should look something like this

Now that we have added all our files we are ready to record. Go to Recorder/recorder Settings from the menu above and click the Advanced Tab. Make sure the Close Disc box is checked and I always like to verify the disc just to be sure and click ok.

Advanced Tab

Click the Record button to begin recording. When asked to do so insert a blank disc and be sure to give it a name. Toast will display a progress bar while it is recording your data and you're done.
