I can't get the scaling to work, the wineglass looks good from the front wiew perspective but not from the birds eye view. It doesn't scale to the middle.

2008-06-27: Steven said:
It sounds like you need to scale the wineglass on another axis. Try selecting the model, change to the scale tool and manipulate the one of the other axis to pull it into shape. Please make sure you have a look at the scale tool tutorial if you are unsure how to use it's functions.

I figured it out just after I posted the question :p

I was using the wrong axis , I have to use the yellow one in the middle.

2008-06-30: Steven said:
Thats right, the yellow one (it starts off blue until selected), will scale all axis at once, creating a constrained scale.

HI! First of all, thx for this guide, its very cool. My problem is, i can't select the upper face of the glass (to extrude), becouse there are a lot of faces, not only one as in your tutorial. My other problem is, that I can't find the modeling option.
bye

Hi Connor, throw the question up here, and I'll do my best to get back to you.
cheers
Steven.

Thanks for your reply! It is actually quite hard to explain, so I made a video of it. Pretty much, when I want to scale a face, it moves it up and down. It makes things very very hard to work with. If you could help me out I would greatly appreciate it! :)

The video is located here:

envisageworks.com/maya.zip

It kinda explains the problem better than described. Thanks so much! :)

Hi Conner, thanks for the video, it really helped explain the issue. I'm still not 100% sure why this would happen, but I hope this video reply helps you work it out. Let me know if you continue to have no luck, and i'll explore other potential solutions.

Wow! Thank you so much! That was brilliant! Worked like a charm. I dont really know what was wrong though, becuase now the option is unselected and it is still fixed. Here is a video:

Thanks! :)

Hi Conner, glad it worked out!
Displaying polycount simply allows you to see how many faces / vertex points / edges ... there are in total, in view and selected.

Turning it on and off wouldn't do anything to fix the problem, only give you an indication to what you have selected. So lets call it a bug (maya is great, but it has it's problems too!)

If you have any further questions/feedback, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Cheers
Steven.

Hi, Great tutorial!!!
My first question is, how do you get one face on the top of the wine glass, my cylinder has 20 separate faces that correspond to the 20 subdivision axis.
My second question is, how do you work in the Modeling window? I seem to be working in the Polygons window and I don't have a Modeling option - so I can't find the Edit Polygons window to extrude? Thanks for any help.

2009-03-27: steven said:
Hi Maktavish,

When you create a polygon cylinder, open up the channel box (top right hand corner), find the INPUTS section, open up polycylinder node and change the Subdivisions Axis from 1 to 0.

Secondly, you need to change the mode by choosing modeling from the drop down box at the top left of the maya window. that will give you all the options you need.

Good tutorials man thanks. I had the same problem as Maktavish for about about 30 minutes trying to figure out what the problem was until i read the comments. The problem was i had to change the Subdivisions cap from 1 to 0. not the Subdivisions Axis. I just installed maya 5.0 i had it for awhile but they stopped supporting it so i had to e-mail them for a register key, That thing that pops up saying "commercial use only" its quite annoying.
