Neuroaffective Design
Research Leader: Professor Allan Whitfield
The research group is the product of an international collaboration between: Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), Carleton University (Canada) and Swinburne University of Technology (Australia).
Area of Focus
Investigates emotion as a basis for design decision-making in respect of consumer products and services, approaching emotion from a neuroevolutionary perspective.
Emotion is an emerging research field that challenges the assumption that decision-making is controlled by conscious thought and logic. A growing body of research reveals the impact of emotion on people’s affective choices.
The group bases research activity on scientific method. This is not merely a point of difference from the subjective methods traditionally employed in design; it is a major shift that allies design research with mainstream scientific research.
Linked Projects
Affective Pedagogy
Led by Associate Professor Deirdre Barron
Investigates the affective design factors that influence educational performance, such as the design of the classroom.
Affective User-Centred Design
Led by Dr Carolyn Barnes
Investigates the validity of methods that claim to deliver insight into affective design decisions. Currently, the Affective User-Centred Design project focuses on participatory design in respect to communication design, service design and digital media design (for museum exhibits), conducting intensive, case study research.
