Postgraduate Coursework Programs at the National Institute of Design (NID)

The suite of 1.5 year postgraduate programs are premium products aimed at qualified applicants who either have recognised undergraduate qualification and/or significant industry experience in design. The programs offer an opportunity to develop high levels of knowledge and skills with like-minded students. Whilst the programs offer the opportunity to engage with deeper understanding of individual disciplines, they also offer flexibility and collaboration with peers from other design disciplines to broaden students' understanding of design and the practise of design. The programs therefore suit high quality designers who wish to change from one discipline at undergraduate level to another at postgraduate level.

The content of each program concentrates around key research areas or themes such as use-centred design, sustainability and design as a service, supporting greater depth of learning in each domain.

Communication Design

Swinburne's Communication Design programs give students advanced knowledge and experience in the development of communication strategies, branding programs and information design principles for contemporary design practice. Projects explore the research, analysis, planning and development phases of major design projects, including the visual audit of existing design collateral, brand values, client and audience research, and cost analysis. You will be challenged to refine design deliverables to a high industry standard, considering the aesthetic and conceptual dynamics of effective communication as well as the extension of design across a range of applications. Strategic thinking and design management are emphasised, as is the role of design in humanising information and communication.

These programs offer units in communication, creative strategy, branding, publication, and information design. The emphasis is on structured skills acquisition, design investigation and applied design projects.

Multimedia Design

Swinburne's Multimedia Design programs produce graduates with an advanced understanding of interactive design, design and production for time and sequence, and design for convergent media. This is a wide ranging program that covers the full spectrum of themes and knowledge for the contemporary multimedia designer, including usability and user-centred design for the screen, motion graphics for broadcast, web animation and film titles, animation, 3D modelling, project planning, storyboard techniques, principles of narrative, scriptwriting and character development for digital media, principles of game design and multimedia design for public spaces. While responding to the primary role of technology in contemporary design, units emphasise the aesthetic and conceptual dynamics of effective communication, strategic thinking and aspects of design management, cognitive psychology, social science and design theory. The nature of teaching and learning provides structured skills acquisition while encouraging participants to become informed, independent designers with the ability to produce compelling designs.

These programs offers units in; user centered design, design process and concept development, sound and motion design, production pathways for video and basic cinematography, narrative and play, animation forms, convergent media in real and cell space and information design.
