Lecturer and Convenor for Contemporary Design Issues, a second year core subject that has been offered across the university as an elective, Nanette also lectures in the first year subject, 20th Century Design.
In 2006 and 2007 Nanette was a member of teaching teams that received citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the national Carrick Awards for university teaching and Vic-Chancellor’s Awards in 2006 and 2007. She is an active participant in the Learning Exchange group within Swinburne Design.
Currently enrolled in a PhD at The University of Melbourne in the School of Historical Studies and the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, Nanette’s PhD research is on the lively culture of do-it-yourself homebuilding and furnishing in Australia between 1946-1966, that was a response to post-war shortages of housing, labour and materials. Her other research interests include Modernist design and the design of retail spaces, from department stores to online shopping and contemporary design.
Nanette has curated two exhibitions about design, Pen to Pixel: 100 Years of Design at Swinburne at Chapel off Chapel Gallery in 2008 and Savage Luxury: Modernist Design in Melbourne 1930-1939 for Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen in 2007, both accompanied by catalogues documenting the research.
Nanette’s most recent publication is a book chapter titled Milkbar Moderne’ in Modern Times: The Untold Story of Modernism in Australia, Melbourne University Press and the Powerhouse Museum, 2008.
She was commissioned to write a biography of pioneering modernist furniture and interior designer Frederick Ward, for the Australian Dictionary of Biography in 2008.
Her paper titled ‘Nipped in the Bud: Clement Meadmore’s interior for the Teahouse’ was published in Cultural Crossroads, the proceedings of the annual conference of the Society of Architectural Historians of Australia and New Zealand in 2009.
In July 2010 Nanette delivered a paper titled 'Man With a Plan' on masculinity and DIY culture in post war Australia at the annual conference of the Popular Culture Association of Australia and New Zealand in Sydney.
