Dr Barnes is a Senior Research Fellow. In the field of design, her research spans the areas of participatory design, the role of design in mediating information in the contemporary museum and the history of Australian modernist design. In the field of Australian art history, she has established research interests in site-specific and post-conceptual painting practices, artists’ networks, artist-generated initiatives and the institutional dynamics of the Australian art world. Craftsman House published her monograph on the Hong Kong-Australian artist John Young in 2005.

Within the Faculty of Design, Dr Barnes is Director, External Research Liaison, which involves promoting the value of the work of the Faculty’s research clusters to industry and community partners.

Dr Barnes is an assistant editor of the International Journal of Design and a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Visual Arts Practice and visual:design:scholarship: Research Journal of the Australian Graphic Design Association. She is an assessor for project funding for the Australian Research Council.
