A passionate and effective contributor to design practice and design education since the late 1950s, Prof Miller-Smith’s contributions to the design field were recently distinguished via his induction into the Design Institute of Australia's Hall of Fame (2007).

"There is often an assumption that a computer designs, but a computer has nothing to do with creative work, it is simply a tool for assisting (brilliantly), what you create.  Design is about creating products that interact with the public, and effective products are nourished by social debate between peers.  Social space is at the heart and soul of research and development and is crucial to answering questions like:  Who is this for, where is it going and what does it do?"

Prof Miller-Smith is chiefly responsible for creating the first ever Bachelor of Design course in Australia, at Adelaide College of the Arts, in June 1979.  A great advocate and champion of design, Prof Miller-Smith is actively involved in various committees and judging panels including Swinburne’s Faculty of Design advisory committee.  He is also a Fellow of:  The Design Institute of Australia; the Chartered Society of Designers; the International Society of Typographic Designers; and the Royal Society of Arts.

Prof Miller-Smith has spent a life steeped in design and his extensive career provides a unique understanding of the complexities and essential relevance of design to daily life.

A Charted Designer holding professional qualifications in typography, Prof Miller-Smith’s academic positions have included: Professor and Head of Design at Swinburne University of Technology;    Principal of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee; Head of the South Australian School of Design; Head of Visual Communications DJCAD; Coordinator NDD Typography London College of Printing Design Department (now London College of Communication at the University of the Arts); and Lecturer/Graphics Leeds College of Art.
