The National Institute for Design Research (NIDR) was established in 2003 as a focal point for design research and postgraduate education in the Faculty of Design. The Faculty has been the national leader in tertiary design education since the early 1960s and its involvement in vocational training in art and design extends back to 1908. The Faculty is unique in Australia in offering degrees in design alone. Research degrees include the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Design by Research (MDes) and the Professional Doctorate in Design (DDes). NIDR builds on the Faculty's achievements in conducting industry-relevant, technologically innovative design research, using design practice as the primary investigative method. Research programs allow designers to extend their practical and theoretical knowledge of design through investigation into real world design activity, conducted through design practice and project work.
