What is International Student Exchange?
International Student Exchange offers you the opportunity to undertake short-term study under a formal student exchange agreement between Swinburne University of Technology and an overseas institution. You will receive credit towards your Swinburne degree by studying subjects approved by your Head of Program and by making a presentation to Faculty of Design academics and staff upon your return. You will continue to pay fees or HECS as appropriate.

When and where can I undertake International Student Exchange?
The Faculty of Design encourages students to undertake exchange in the second semester of second year or first semester of third year of their degree. The Faculty of Design currently has International Student Exchange Agreements with the following overseas institutions:

What are the benefits?
By getting involved in the exchange program you will experience design from a new perspective. You will increase and extend your skills and experience new and different design education systems. The experience of living and studying in a different country, within a different culture, is exciting and provides the opportunity to develop both educationally and personally, and may open up new opportunities in your career and personal life.

What criteria must I satisfy to be eligible to apply for International Student Exchange?
To be eligible for selection you should be currently enrolled in your first or second year of undergraduate studies (Students cannot undertake exchange in Honours or the final semester of their degree). Selection of an exchange student is based on academic performance (credit average), suitability and maturity.

What costs are involved?
Students on exchange pay a full semester/year of HECS or up-front fees but no fees are paid to the host institution. While on exchange, students can expect the following expenses:
bulletReturn airfare (students are expected to make their own arrangements)
bulletAccommodation and meals
bulletClothing, books and supplies, travel and health insurance (costs vary)
bullet Entertainment and other incidental expenses

To support students who wish to undertake a studies towards their Swinburne degree, the Education Abroad Office administers a number of scholarships and travel grants. In 2007 a huge new scholarship scheme was initiated, so there are now funding opportunities for most destinations.

To obtain a visa, many governments require proof of sufficient funds for the planned study period.

31 March for Semester 2
31 August for Semester 1
