Industry Placement / IP Profiles

Amy Stephenson
3rd Year Communication Design Industry Placement Student
Lonely Planet Publications

My Industry Placement position is at Lonely Planet Publications.
I work within a team of 16 people including 12 designers. My role is not limited to one product, project or media. I have been lucky enough to be involved in everything from advertising design, book series design, point of sale merchandise and various other sales and marketing projects.

The type of projects vary day to day and are spread across numerous departments such as working with LPTV – Lonely Planets production company – to LPI – their independent image library.

The Melbourne office is the world headquarters of Lonely Planet and so the majority of design work is created here. Because of this I have been involved in projects that get distributed all over the world including Europe, the United Kingdom and America.

My Industry Placement has prepared me for work in the Design Industry in a way that University alone never could and I feel privileged to have worked within such a fantastic and supportive company.

Placed with Icon Partners

I have spent the past 7 months working with the skilled team of graphic designers at Icon Partners, a brand and design consultancy that specializes in developing strong brands for their clients. Work ranges from corporate identity, campaigns and event graphics, to publication design, signage and packaging.

In the relatively short period I have worked at Icon I have been able to gain great insight into the processes, restrictions and hurdles involved in all elements of design from the conceptual to the finish art stages right through to prepress and print management.

Industry Placement has allowed me to build on skills learnt at school and university and has pushed my capabilities, confidence and skill base much further than I would have expected.

Sputnik Agency

As one of our longest serving partners in the Industry Placement program, Sputnik Agency serves as living, breathing proof that it really works! Sputnik have now entered their seventh year of partnership with the Faculty of Design and have employed their ninth student.

Nick Cummins, one of the founding members of Sputnik, is so enthusiastic about the program he only wishes the option was available when he was studying.

“The program is a common sense approach to learning and interacting with industry. There are obvious benefits for both employer and student. Employers benefit by tapping into the students fresh and vibrant ideas and the new design innovations they bring from the Faculty of Design. For students, the benefits are just as great; they gain invaluable industry experience while being mentored by senior designers at the cutting edge of design.” From experience, Nick believes the buddy system implemented at Sputnik works to encourage the students’ confidence in their abilities and helps them to swim when he throws them in the deep end.

When searching for the right students, Nick looks for “60% skill and 40% ability to fit in to the studio culture”. For this reason, Nick places a large importance on the matching process at the Faculty of Design. With two former IP students now employed full-time, he is more than pleased with the process.

On top of everything else, Nick enjoys participating in the program because of the sense of satisfaction he gets watching the students grow into experienced designers.
