Becoming an Industry Placement Employer
Selection of employers for the Industry Placement program is an important process.
Essentially, we look at whether you have an ability and willingness to provide a student with a meaningful, productive work experience and supervision in their chosen area of Design or Film and Television. Size and business profiles do not factor in determining a business’ suitability for participation in the program; the quality of experience does.
Employers can be based locally, nationally or internationally and can vary from typical small to medium size enterprises to larger more complex organisations with global networks.
Benefits of becoming an Industry Employer
- Bring fresh energy and new ideas to your company. A students’ relative commercial inexperience sometimes leads to greater creative solutions. When an idealistic student arrives they bring a fresh energy to the workplace. Experienced designers can harness this enthusiasm and give their imagination a practical outlet.
- Pipeline to secure future employees. Although students are required to return to the Faculty of Design for another year to complete their Honours, it is not uncommon for students to stay on part-time with their INDUSTRY PLACEMENT employer until they have completed their degree, or to continue to be mentored by their host organization.
- Contribute to the training of an emerging professional. Many employers have commented on the enjoyment they receive from watching and assisting a student’s development into a great designer.
- Create a flexible working environment. Having an industry placement student in your studio may free up current employees to take on high priority or more complex specialty projects.
- Some employers create project opportunities that will be available from year to year, with a different industry placement student
