Master of Design (Communication Design)

"Swinburne has a good reputation in the design field and has a lot of practical units even at master level. Students have the freedom to develop their own projects and there's lots of interaction between students and teachers.

The Design Centre is one of the main reasons I chose Swinburne: it provides students the opportunity to work with real clients and the chance to build a strong folio before stepping out into the workforce."

"Several factors contributed to why I chose to study at Swinburne’s Faculty of Design. I had heard many positive things about Swinburne’s Communication Design course, but when visiting the campus for the first time, I felt very comfortable and felt that’d I’d fit in nicely, but more importantly the course structure also appealed to me, especially the options for different types of study such as Industry Placement.

There is just so much I have learnt, that I would have never had the chance to if I weren’t studying. The most beneficial skills were those that I developed through my Industry Placement year. There has been nothing more valuable than actually learning to put your skills to use in the real world. It is the most amazing experience to be learning through work, especially things that usually cannot be taught in a university environment.

My study experience as a whole has been very enjoyable and I know I am getting better and better at what I love to do. "

"Before I came to Australia I didn’t have much industry experience. Swinburne provides teaching methods and industry connections that far exceeded my expectations. Design Centre trains you how to talk to clients and present your ideas professionally. Being able to speak with real clients who provide good feedback and insight has really helped me to pursue my career goals.

I feel much more confident when it comes to pitching ideas and conducting presentations. It’s great being able to work in a team environment of like minded communication designers rather than just as a group of students."

"I chose Swinburne after attending the open day; it felt like the best fit for me. The subjects offered, the lecturers I spoke to and also the university’s reputation in terms of design - these were all factors in my decision. I really enjoy the aspect of personal, self-driven learning that is expected at tertiary level education. The lecturers are always available and a wealth of knowledge but it is up to the student as to how far they decide to take the brief.

I love learning new tricks, whether they are from a lecturer or the person sitting next to you in class, the sharing of knowledge is great. Of course there is nothing better than getting something back from the printers and it looks exactly the way you’d imagined.

I have been invited to do an internship at Aalto University in Helsinki. An amazing opportunity, I can’t wait. I’ll spend two months working at The Design Factory, collaborating with other designers, engineers and business students."

"Swinburne has helped clarify that design is most definitely the career path I want to pursue. By having the opportunity to take part in the Industry Placement program, I have learnt how to properly put together a folio and become familiar with the interview process.

I am currently on industry placement working at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), an institution that celebrates, explores and promotes the cultural and creative richness of the moving image. I get to work on a range of different outcomes, which promote the company’s upcoming programs, films and exhibitions. I love it so far and it has been such a learning experience. I would recommend the Industry Placement program as it has definitely given me a lot of confidence and knowledge to excel in the design field."
