Accessibility

If something is important enough to be published on the web, then it should be available to all students and staff, irrespective of whether or not they have a disability.

Swinburne is required by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to treat disabled students in the same manner as other students:

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has developed advisory notes in relation to the Act which may be accessed at the following URL:
http://www.humanrights.gov.au/disability_rights/standards/www_3/www_3.html#s2_2

The advisory notes state, inter alia, that:
"The provision of information and online services through the Worldwide Web is a service covered by the DDA. Equal access for people with a disability in this area is required by the DDA where it can reasonably be provided. This requirement applies to any individual or organisation developing a Worldwide Web page in Australia, or placing or maintaining a Web page on an Australian server. This includes pages developed or maintained for purposes relating to employment; education; provision of services including professional services, banking, insurance or financial services, entertainment or recreation, telecommunications services, public transport services, or government services; sale or rental of real estate; sport; activities of voluntary associations; or administration of Commonwealth laws or programs"

Swinburne is committed to providing a website that is accessible to disabled users. We currently have implemented key design elements, which will aid in allowing all visitors to have access to Swinburne websites, including:

  • Accesskeys have been used to create keyboard shortcuts for link elements. These are based on the UK goverment accesskeys system.
  • Alt S allows users to jump over navigation links and go straight to content
  • Alt 0 links to accesskey details and accessiblity information
  • Alt 1 links to the Swinburne homepage
  • Alt 4 links to the Swinburne search page
  • Alt 8 links to the terms and conditions of use for the Swinburne web site
  • Alt 9 links to a feedback form
  • This site is optimized for a 1024 x 768 screen resolution. Users with visual impairments should try setting their screen resolution to 800 x 600.
  • The ability to change the text size of the pages is located at the bottom of each page
  • Internet Explorer users who have difficulty reading reading links should click on 'Tools', then 'Internet Options...', then 'Accessibility...' and under Formating select 'Ignore colors specified on Web pages'. Then click 'OK' and then 'OK' again.

Images

We have used a blank alt attribute where images are used only for layout or decorative purposes. Text equivalents have been provided where images contain content.

Tables

Tables have been used for page layout of the websites. Summaries are provided for tables. Layout tables have summaries stating they are layout tables.

Cascading Style Sheets

Cascading Style Sheets have been implemented in the Swinburne website. Users are able to turn off or override our styles and still be able to read the page content
