What to consider

The following items need to be considered optimizing pages for search engines:

  • URLs with more than 2 parameters not liked by crawler
  • Pages with many (+100) links to other pages will have a low page rank
  • Frames are bad because the crawler doesn’t know where to go
  • Access through select dropdown and button completely block indexing by the crawler
  • Access through search box completely block indexing by the crawler
  • Redirects in the form of cloaking or with JavaScript or meta tags completely block indexing by the crawler
  • Link text (called Anchor text) needs to combine two related terms to be effective, eg. ’multimedia courses’ rather than ’multimedia courses
  • Popularity of referring site. Links from most popular pages will be ranked highest.
  • Popularity in relevant communities, eg. Sites that have lists of universities
  • Text surrounding the link, eg. ’Swinburne has Engineering courses that produce jobs.’ rather than ’Swinburne has Engineering courses that produce jobs. Click here for more information.
  • Title attribute in “” tag, eg. Swinburne has Engineering courses that produce jobs.
  • Keyword data, what is the best keyword(s) to be used in document. By looking at frequently used search keywords you can determine what are the best keywords to have in your page.
