Detrimental Factors

Keyword spamming
Ensure that you have no more than 20 keywords on each page.

Duplicate content
Search engines are interested in unique documents and text, and if they find multiple pages with the same content, you are reducing the chances of ranking in the search engines results page. If you do have duplicate pages use a re-direct to point all versions to a single page.

Canonical issues
(www.example.com, //example.com, www.example.com/index.html are differently indexed and ranked even if they go to the same place) Eg. www.swinburne.edu.au is treated differently to www.swin.edu.au

Invalid code
Test your page at http://validator.w3.org/ to make sure all your code is valid html. The use of code which may not be readable or spiderable to search engine bots can affect rankings directly.

Broken links
Search Engines can negatively degrade rankings on sites and pages with many broken links
