Tips for a Successful Transition
For the majority of new students,
it takes a while for everything to fall into place. Just remember
that you're not alone. Below are some tips to help get you
started.
 |
If you don't understand, always ask for
help. Don't be shy about asking questions. Remember
there is no such thing as a stupid question. |
| |
 |
Get involved in the university social life by joining
some clubs and societies. Don't just join up and forget
about it after Orientation. Clubs
and societies provide an excellent opportunity to
meet people with the same interests as you. |
| |
 |
Make an effort to talk to other students (especially
in your first classes). Like you, they probably don't
know anybody and will be relieved to know someone. |
|

|
 |
Set up your free, university email and check it regularly.
Important information is often circulated via university
email and it is a good means of keeping in touch with
the people you meet. |
| |
 |
Check out where your faculty/department
offices are before you need to call on their assistance. |
| |
 |
Make sure you know where the library
is located and how their borrowing system works. |
| |
 |
Make use of the Swinburne
Student Amenities Association |
| |
 |
Speak to tutors as much as possible as they are your
first call for academic help. |
| |
 |
Make use of student
services, e.g., Student Health Services, Counselling,
Language and Learning Skills Unit, etc. |
| |
 |
Get organised! Keep a diary, organise your folders,
carry an address book, etc. |
| |
 |
Learn time management skills. Keep a balance between
uni work, social life, sport, family life etc |
