Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award (Higher Education)

The recipient of this Award for the development and implementation of a highly innovative method for experienced-based learning in marketing is:

Mr Mark Tolson, Lecturer, Marketing, Faculty of Business and Enterprise.

The three principal features of Mark's approach are:

  • the ability to influence, inspire and motivate students through active engagement with exciting industry partners to provide "real life" experiential learning opportunities
  • heightened student engagement, motivation and academic success by combining discipline-specific knowledge with a rich array of applied examples
  • commitment to mentoring students beyond the classroom to facilitate their personal growth and development, and promote their interest in the marketing discipline.

 


Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Award (TAFE)

The recipient of this Award for outstanding work with the Young Mum's VCAL program is:

Ms Louise Schilling, Centre for Life Long Learning, School for Sustainable Futures

Louise is recognised for:

  • leading the program with compassion and professionalism in every aspect, from the facilitation of pastoral/support services to classroom management, learning support and community relations
  • leading her team with a clear and direct vision
  • developing several engaging and supportive initiatives that make the program the outstanding success that it is. These initiatives include the development of a toy library; the engagement of health professionals; and support with transport and food.

Vice Chancellor’s Research Award

The recipient of this Award for outstanding research in Astrophysics is:

Professor Karl Glazebrook, Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies

Karl is recognised for:

  • building Australia's leading research group in the observational study of galaxy assembly over cosmic time
  • his significant contribution towards Swinburne achieving a 'top 400' listing in the SHJT global university rankings
  • winning many ARC Discovery Research Grants
  • a strong record in research publication, including cover articles in the journal Nature which had enormous media impact
  • successful collaboration with major international researchers.

Vice Chancellor’s Research Award (Early Career)

The recipient of this Award for outstanding achievement in optical data storage is:

Dr Xiangping Li, Centre for Micro-Photonics, Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences

Xiangping is recognised for:

  • pioneering innovative storage technology - multi-dimensional optical data storage using a polarisation microscope. This new physical mechanism of the polarisation sensitivity in polymeric photo refractivity led to the world's first four-dimensional optical data storage device
  • high quality research publications
  • winning the ARC Discovery and a Fellowship Award for his highly original work.

Vice Chancellor’s Industry Engagement Award

The recipient of this Award for a major collaboration with Suntech Power Holdings is:

The Victoria-Suntech Advanced Solar Facility (VSASF) Team, Faculty of Engineering & Industrial Sciences (Professor Min Gu, Dr Baohua Jia, Dr Xi Chen, Dr Narges Fahim, Dr Zi Ouyang, Dr Jhantu Kumar Saha, Dr Nicholas Stokes, Dr Daniel Day, Ms Jia Lou, Ms Pierrette Michaux, Mr Riaan Lourens)

The team is recognised for:

  • providing cutting-edge technological services to industry and gaining industry endorsement of Swinburne's research excellence
  • developing industry-engaged learning and a training partnership with Suntech for both undergraduate and research students
  • promoting Swinburne's profile in industry engagement and boosting the University's reputation nationally and internationally

Vice Chancellor’s Community Engagement Award

The recipient of this Award is:

the Bushfire Skills Broker Initiative Team, Centre for Lifelong Learning, School for Sustainable Futures (Ms Sue Buxton, Mr Chris Muir and Ms Bev Mackie-Coop)

The team is recognised for:

  • developing a model to retrain individuals, employers and community groups affected by the Black Saturday Fires, based on a robust training needs analysis
  • a successful Community Engagement model of delivery, winning the enthusiasm and support of business, industry and local development agencies via a sound communication strategy and customised, multi-ticketed courses

Vice Chancellor’s Internationalisation Award

The recipient of this Award for the successful internationalisation of the Product Design Engineering program is:

the Product Design Engineering Teaching Team, Faculty of Design and Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences (Mr Ian de Vere, Associate Professor Soullis Tavrou, Dr Blair Kuys, Ms Katherine Bissett-Johnson and Dr Christine Thong)

The team is recognised for developing a multi-faceted approach to the internationalisation of the learning and teaching environment through:

  • collaborative international project activity
  • internationalisation of the curriculum
  • development and implementation of international exchange agreements and student mobility programs
  • active engagement with international aid organisations.

Vice Chancellor’s Sustainability Award

The recipient of this Award for the design of an innovative ' Community Sustainability Engagement Evaluation Toolbox' is:

the National Centre for Sustainability, School for Sustainable Futures (Mr Damien Sweeney and Mr Martin Pritchard)

The team is recognised for:

  • assisting local government and others to design, implement and evaluate robust sustainability engagement programs
  • promoting the design, implementation and evaluation of better engagement and behaviour change
  • research and curriculume development in diverse aspects of sustainability.

Vice Chancellor’s Leadership and Service Excellence Award

The recipient of this Award for the development of a new model for research data collection is:

the Swinburne Research and Swinburne Library Team (Ms Sharon Kitt, Ms Ning Shen, Ms Merina Farida, Ms Stephane Marchaud, Ms Teula Morgan, Ms Rebecca Parker, Ms Lauren Dunstan, Ms Sian Besselaar, Ms Nyssa Parkes, Mr Shaun Burriss)

The team is recognised for:

  • contributing to an increase in the number of Swinburne publications reported for HERDC
  • increasing the number of publications recorded in the Swinburne Research Bank, thereby improving the public profile of the University's research output
  • laying the groundwork for future collaboration in regard to Swinburne Researchers Profile Page System, ERA 2012 and Swinburne's Australian National Data Service.

Vice Chancellor’s Innovation Award

The recipient of this Award is:

the Smart Rack Solution Team, Faculty of Information & Communication Technologies and Information Technology Services (Mr Robert Shaw, Ms Moyra Rheinberger, Mr John Newbigin, Mr Daniel Iturbe, Mr Oai Dai, Mr Simon Forsayeth, Ms Fon Yooiam)

The team is recognised for:

  • many improvements to the three networking labs in the Advanced Technologies Centre
  • maximising effective learning time by reducing the time needed to set up IT equipment
  • creating operational efficiencies for both academic and technical staff, and thus contributing to the University's sustainability strategy.

Vice Chancellor’s Equity and Diversity Award

The recipient of this Award is:

the Faculty of Information & Communication Technologies Student Engagement Committee (Ms Judith Grundy, Ms Moyra Rheinberger, Mr Tony Cricenti, Mr Anthony Bayley, Dr Rosemary Stockdale, Ms Anne Davis, Dr Catherine Lang)

The team is recognised for:

  • in developing and delivering more tailored intervention for students requiring support through
    • a mentoring system
    • a faculty-wide volunteer program with 40 registered volunteers
    • study groups, social media interaction and a series of 'on-track' workshops
    • staff/student sporting events, and events to celebrate cultural diversity
  • providing financial and academic leadership to two student organised groups
  • organising activities outside the academic environment to build a community of engaged students, promote gender equity and ameliorate isolation and socioeconomic disadvantage.

Vice Chancellor’s Indigenous Education Award

The recipient of this Award for an Indigenous Mentoring Program developed for Melbourne Storm is:

Ms Melinda Eason, Programs Course Convenor, Centre for Lifelong Learning, School for Sustainable Futures

Melinda is recognised for:

  • her successful work with Indigenous young people studying the Cert III in Community Services and Cert II in Mumgu-dhal tyama-tiyt
  • improving student retention rates and the leadership capacity and employability of young Indigenous people
  • promoting the importance of education and fostering Swinburne's partnership with Indigenous communities and agencies
  • providing more qualified Indigenous workers in the community services sector.
