Print terms explained
Some of the definitions below are to assist you in understanding different print and production terminology.
Digital printing
Digital printing is a technology that permits the linking of printing devices to computers which results in faster turnaround times, lowered production and setup costs, and the ability to personalise documents easier. In plain English terms, this includes most high-volume photocopying devices. Digital printing is useful for short print runs and usually allows the client to send their own 'artwork' in portable document format (a PDF). At Swinburne Press, black and white printing is done on a high-speed digital production printer, while digital colour printing is produced on a high-quality colour machine.
Digital technology offers the advantages of on-demand printing with a quick turnaround, minimal set-up costs and can be used to economically reproduce quantities that would not be viable via traditional printing technologies. Digital printing is costed on a 'per impression' (per page) basis.
One constraint is that it is not compatible with all paper stocks and is generally best suited to standard paper sizes (eg. A5, A4, A3).
Off-set printing
This is currently the most common commercial printing method, in which ink is offset from the printing plate to a second roller then to paper. At Swinburne Press, all off-set printing is contracted through a panel of preferred print suppliers selected through a competitive tender process. This has resulted in the Press achieving very competitive pricing for the Swinburne community.
Generally speaking, off-set printing is mainly used for longer print runs (ie the longer the print run the cheaper it becomes). Because it involves considerable pre-press and set-up time you need to allow at least 7-10 working days for print production.
Large format inkjet printing
Similar to digital printing, this is a cost-effective way of producing a small number of large format (A2, A1, A0) posters, signs or banners. Again, this print method is contracted through the preferred print supplier panel.
Approximately 5 working days should be allowed for production.
