The graphic design process
Effective print communication demands careful thought and planning. For example, what are your communication objectives? Who is your target audience? What approach and format (ie DL brochure, poster, postcard, booklet or something altogether different) is appropriate to the audience? Having considered and developed a response to these questions, what budget is required (or available) to support the project?
If photographic imagery is determined to be necessary, does this already exist or can it be sourced (at a fee) from royalty free imagery or photo libraries? Or is original photography a more effective approach? These are just some of the initial considerations at the beginning of any design and print project.
There are numerous others:
- Copywriting – is the language and tone appropriate for the audience?
- How will the piece be distributed?
- What paper stocks and what production techniques (eg. varnishes, laminates or other speciality finishes) will enhance the design and tone of the communication?
These are just some of the myriad issues which we, as graphic designers, can assist you to address in creating and realising your print communication project.
As you can see, it is not necessarily straightforward, and this is why forethought, planning and experience are integral to a successful outcome. Some further information about printing and production methods can be found by clicking here.
