Council election race heats up

Next week the polls open for what is becoming a hotly contested University Council election.

It's been several years since Swinburne has seen such enthusiastic campaigning for a position on the University Council. The five candidates vying for the position of General Staff Member on Council are Graeme Baker, Ronald Fisher, Janelle Hansen, Lisa Harris and Grace Sanna. To make an informed decision, click on their names to read why they think you should vote for them.

You can vote for the candidates by visiting the Student Information Centres at Hawthorn, Prahran, Wantirna, Croydon or Lilydale. Booths are open from 12.30pm, Monday 24 November to 2.30pm, Friday 28 November. Staff must bring their staff ID card to be eligible to vote.

Register now for the International Student Graduation Ceremonies

Graduation ceremonies are being held at the Hawthorn Town Hall to commemorate the academic achievements of Swinburne’s international students.

Staff are invited to take part in the academic procession or to sit in the audience. Information on the ceremonies and registration is available on the Student Oporations homepage. The registration closing date is 5pm, 5 December 2008.

‘The Astronomical Frontier’, a lecture by Dr Taft Armandroff about the opportunities for discovery at the Keck Observatory in the next decade and beyond. Armandroff will discuss the twin Keck 10-metre telescopes, and the future for these powerful instruments. For further information email contact@astro.swin.edu.au

‘Looking Forwards: Higher Education in 2058’, the latest Faculty of Life and Social Sciences Centenary Lecture by Professor Simon Marginson. All staff are welcome to join Simon in AS404, Hawthorn campus from 12.30pm to 1.30pm as he discusses the future development of universities and higher education. The official Swinburne Christmas cards are now available for order in two different designs. Orders must be submitted before Friday 28 November. Cards cost $2 each, with a minimum order of 10, and are supplied with a pre-printed, postage paid envelope. For more information contact the Christmas Card Officer at kporter@swin.edu.au.

Gardasil and travel vaccinations available

Female staff 26 years and under - have you had your complete course of Gardasil?

This vaccine is for the prevention of Cervical Cancer and some common herpes viruses. The immunisation program of three vaccines over a six month period is being offered free by the government until June 2009.

The Hawthorn Health Service is also available for all your travel vaccines. If you are going overseas or planning a trip for 2009 you may require immunisations.

The Health Service is now open some evenings for your convenience. For more information or to make a booking call extension 8483.

Young Mums program receives Diversity@Work Award

Babies in the classroom are a common sight in the award-winning Young Mums program at the Croydon campus.

Swinburne took out the 'Recognising Today's Youth as the Future of Tomorrow' category for large businesses award for its Young Mums/Childcare VCAL program. The Diversity@Work award recognises the program’s commitment to helping young people enter the workforce. The Young Mums program enables young mothers, aged 15 to 18, to attend TAFE to continue their education with their babies.

The program has also been recognised by the NAPCAN Safe Communities Award for the Prevention of Child Abuse. Congratulations to Louise Schilling, Program Coordinator, Katherine Carragher and Lisa Devlin-Neale.

‘Higher Education Governance Reform Across Europe’: Seminar

Swinburne Research is hosting a seminar by Jon File, Executive Director for the Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies.

The seminar will focus on the European Commission's modernisation agenda for higher education, and how the strategy is making Europe the world's leading knowledge economy. It will involve a high-level overview of some of the major outcomes of this reform across 32 European countries. Join Swinburne Research and Jon File in AGSE 207, Hawthorn Campus, on Wednesday 3 December, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

Do herbal extracts improve brain function?

Participants are wanted for a study by the Brain Sciences Institute which will examine the effects of a herbal extract that may improve memory formation, blood glucose levels and mood.

To be eligible for the study, participants must be aged between 18 and 40 years, non-smokers and taking no medication. Participants will attend five sessions at Hawthorn and will be compensated with $300 at the end of the trial. For further information, please email nutra@swin.edu.au
