Students converge on Swinburne in their quest to produce an energy efficient vehicle

As part of the 2006 RACV Energy Breakthrough, students involved in the Hybrid program from across Victoria will meet at Swinburne on Thursday, 4 May for a workshop that will help them in their quest to design an energy efficient vehicle, machine or innovation in technology.

Now in its 16th year, the RACV Energy Breakthrough encourages participants to examine and use the latest technology while considering its impact on the environment and the way people live locally and globally. School groups work throughout the year to design, build and test vehicles or machines within detailed specifications. It requires a team effort and an across-the-curriculum approach, culminating in a final event in Maryborough in November where vehicles and machines are put to the test.

Swinburne's Education Programs Manager, Beth Crowley said the hybrid category produces some of the most innovative and ingenious vehicle designs in the competition.

"This category is arguably the most challenging and difficult for teams to master, and the all-day event at Swinburne has been structured to enhance students' chances of entering a working vehicle or machine by November," Ms Crowley said.

"Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a range of workshops offered by experts from the Team Swinburne, RACV, Electric Vehicles P/L and Holden, on topics ranging from energy efficiency, aerodynamics to project management.

"This is the second year that Swinburne has assisted with the event, which aims at exposing students and teachers to the latest technology developments and assists them with the design and building of their vehicles."

"It also represents an important synergy program between Swinburne and schools and students interested in the mechanical engineering and allied engineering areas."
