New design publication |
3rd July, 2009 |
A new publication for Victorian designers entitled The Case for Export, has been released by Design Victoria in collaboration with Swinburne University, Austrade, Australian Institute of Export, Australian Graphic Design Association, and Design Institute of Australia.
This resource provides a collection of 16 case studies featuring emerging and established designers who share their experience, positive and negative regarding their expansion overseas, while demonstrating the skills required to export design services.
According to Professor Roger Simpson, member of the project’s steering committee and Director of Swinburne’s Design Centre, “My goal was to ensure that the publication utilised real case studies where the participating design companies approached the export hurdle from different directions.”
“The most outstanding characteristic of the publication is that the case studies do reflect this diversity of approach – profiles of small companies are included as are some long term and high profile design exporters,” said Simpson.
Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings, who launched the publication, said that such a resource would help secure and create jobs in Victoria’s burgeoning design sector.
“More than 76,000 talented people are employed in Victoria’s design sector and these people add value to the state’s manufacturing, construction and creative industries. But there is great potential for the design sector to grow, especially through exporting, which would further boost our reputation as a leader in innovation and as a centre for design excellence,” said Jennings.
In the current economic climate, The Case for Export is a valuable resource to strengthen the export knowledge and expertise of Victoria’s design sector.
“While it was not said explicitly in the publication, it has certainly been my experience and the experiences of the panel, that clients are genuinely delighted to be dealing with an Australian design company that is world class in its area of expertise,” said Simpson.

Shared computer keyboards breeding grounds for bacteria |
1st July, 2009 |
As the popularity of internet cafes and multi-user computer facilities increases, a new study has found that shared keyboards can be breeding grounds for bacteria.
Conducted by researchers from Swinburne’s Environment and Biotechnology Centre, the study investigated the number and type of microorganisms on the keyboards of computers located in three large, multiple-user facilities on the university campus.
These were compared with staff computers that were generally handled by only one person.
The study found almost five times the number of microorganisms on the keyboards of multiple user computers as on single-user computers.
