Intellectual Property Management

Procedures (Download Invention Disclosure, Originators’ Statement Forms) The general procedure for managing intellectual property, including commercial evaluation, protection, and commercialisation is shown in the following flow chart. This procedure highlights the level that decisions are taken, and it is aligned with the University’s Intellectual Property Policy.

Swinburne Innovation System

Documentation The procedures flow chart identifies a series of documents to aid the administration of IP, its protection and commercialisation. These include:

Invention Disclosure

this helps the researcher to describe, in a pro-forma, the invention, its distinctive features, and possible commercial applications. This will form the basis of further commercialisation work.

Originators’ Statement

defines individual contributions, to facilitate implementation of the IP policy.

Screening Guide

used by Swinburne Knowledge, this provides a broad guide to the commercialisation potential of the proposal, and leads to development of a preliminary commercialisation strategy.

Patent Decision Form

helps to provide a broad view on the patentability, and commercial viability of a patent.

Outline Proposal

used to summarise the business case to gain support for initial support, or seed funding, normally to help add value to the intellectual property, or to develop the business case further.

In addition, as part of the commercialisation process, a more detailed business plan will be required, but that will be when the proposal is at a more advanced stage.
