OH&S - Asbestos
Swinburne University recognises that asbestos containing products were used in the construction of some plant and equipment, and in some University buildings, as they were in many residential, commerical, public and government buildings constructed during that period (pre-1978).
In recognition of this, the University has an active asbestos management program that includes the identification, labeling, encapsulation or removal, and safe disposal of asbestos containing material, as relevant.
Swinburne employs independent industrial hygienists, Noel Arnold and Associates, to conduct regular audits and advise us on our asbestos management to ensure that on-one is at risk of exposure. The University cares about your wellbeing and is managing asbestos (and other hazards) in a responsible manner. Your cooperation is sought in maintaining the integrity of the asbestos management program and reducing the risk of creating airborne fibres. In particular, it is important that you do not disturb, in any way (eg drilling, cutting, building modifications etc), possible or known asbestos material. Please contact Facilities and Services if work is required.
As a staff member or student if you have a question about health and safety you can talk to your Health and Safety rep or your manager who has primary responsibility for a safe working environment under the following policy http://www.swinburne.edu.au/corporate/hr/ohs/ohs_policy.htm#s1 As an alternative, you can submit a hazard/incident report to HR.
If you have a query about a building, you can talk to Facilities and Services.
