Worksite Inspections
An inherent part of OHS legislation is the requirement for employers to proactively identify and mitigate hazards and risks which may impact the health and safety of the employees, visitors, contractors and students.
Swinburne University has two OHS inspection checklists to be used when inspecting work areas. Checklist A is to be used for all work areas. Checklist B is also to be used in those areas which have specialist activities, generally speaking checklist B would be used for any area which is not an office work setting.
Work site inspections can be conducted any time in the six months leading up to 31st March and 30th September. Copies of completed work site inspection sheets are to be sent directly to OHS where a database is maintained of all completed inspections.
If you would like assistance or training in conducting your work site inspection please contact the OHS Consultants.
Work site inspections for shared / unallocated areas of the University
OH&S Inspections for the following areas are undertaken by Facilities Services Group:
- External grounds (three monthly)
- Security night audit (three monthly)
- Classrooms & lecture theatres (three monthly)
- Toilets and plumbing (six monthly)
- All other rooms and offices (12 monthly)
Managers are not required to inspect the above areas as part of their work site inspection program. Managers will however, need to include in their inspections specialist classrooms or areas which are dedicated to their management unit.
If a hazard is observed in any of the above areas in between the above periods, all staff are asked not to assume it has been reported and to please:
- Isolate the hazard if this can be done safely; if the hazard poses an immediate threat to safety contact Security
- Notify the OHS Consultant via an incident / hazard report form; or
- Arrange for a work order to be logged with Facilities Services Group via the WSM Plannet system
- For any hazard outside business hours contact security
