Behavioural Interviewing
Attributes can best be identified in the recruitment process by using behavioural -based interviewing technique. Behavioural based interview questions are an extension of the open question. These questions require the applicant to provide examples of situations that illustrate specific past events.
A specific situation makes it harder for the candidate to feed the interviewer with a response that they feel they want. The focus is on HAVE DONE rather than should have done or should do.
Candidates are asked to describe a "specific situation" in their recent past, what their response/behaviour was, and the outcome of the situation. The more recent the past behaviour, and the more long standing the behaviour is, the more accurate the prediction of future behaviour on the job will be.
Past behaviours are one of the best predictors of future behaviours.
