Support and Advice

If you have concerns regarding discrimination, bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, victimisation or vilification, there are a number of options available to deal with your concerns. You can seek support and advice on these options from the following:

Your Manager

Where appropriate, you may like to speak with your manager. You manager will have received training on workplace issues like discrimination, bullying and harassment and the University’s complaint resolution procedures.

Discrimination and Harassment Advisors

The University has a network of trained Discrimination and Harassment Advisors across all campuses. Staff are encouraged to contact an Advisor in the first instance to get some initial information and support.

Advisors are trained to listen to your concerns and can provide you information to help you make an informed choice about any further action you wish to take to resolve your concern. All conversations with Advisors are strictly confidential and Advisors will remain impartial. It is not the role of Advisors to resolve or investigate complaints, nor to be an advocate for a party.

Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program is a free, professional, confidential counselling service for you, your immediate family and members of your household paid for by the University. To contact the EAP, phone 1300 361 008. For further information on EAP, click here.

Victoria Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission

The Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission has responsibilities under the Equal Opportunity Act 1995, the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001 and The Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.

The Commission helps people resolve complaints of discrimination, sexual harassment and religious vilification by offering a confidential, free and impartial complaint resolution service with the aim of achieving a mutual agreement. The Commission also provides education, training and consultancy services.

Australian Human Rights Commission

The Australian Human Rights Commission is an independent statutory organisation that works to protect and promote the human rights of all people in Australia. It is responsible for administering federal discrimination and human rights legislation. The Australian Human Rights Commission provides education and awareness, handles discrimination complaints and breaches of human rights legislation, advocacy and research.

WorkSafe Victoria

Workers experiencing bullying at work can contact the WorkSafe Victoria Advisory Service which can provide information on:

  • Bullying and how to prevent bullying
  • How to raise the issue of bullying in the workplace
  • How to initiate a workplace intervention by a WorkSafe or WorkCover inspector (where appropriate)

Ombudsman Victoria

The Ombudsman of Victoria is an independent office of the Victorian Parliament who investigates complaints about state government departments, most statutory authorities and local government.

The Ombudsman has powers and responsibilities under the Whistleblowers Protection Act 2001 and can investigate disclosures of corrupt or improper conduct by public officers or public bodies.

The Ombudsman also investigates complaints about administrative actions and decisions taken by government authorities and about the conduct or behaviour of their staff.
