ambulance logoSAFETY INFORMATION - Ambulance

There has been a lot of discussion about the issue of whether or not an ambulance should be called in cases of medical emergency.

The University has a duty of care to look after staff and students. This includes the calling of an ambulance in the case of a medical emergency. The decision to call an ambulance should be made based on the nature of the emergency as per an assessment by a first aider or campus nurse, and not based on who will pay for the service.

If you are not first aid trained, but believe an ambulance is required, then you should call an ambulance.

In the case of an ambulance being called, the ambulance officer will ask the patient whether or not they wish to be transported to a health care facility. It is up to the patient to decide whether or not they receive treatment and/or be transported to hospital.

Financially, the patient is responsible for any debts incurred as a result of a medical emergency or illness. However, the patient may then decide to pursue recovery of such cost depending on the situation - this is also a decision of the individual and NOT staff members.

In an emergency,  do not hesitate to contact Kirsten Jeffery (kjeffery@swin.edu.au, 9214 5734).
