Using Images in teaching

Still images such as photographs, drawings, maps and diagrams are protected as artistic works under the Australian Copyright Act 1968. Teaching staff can use images for educational purposes at Swinburne either with permission from the copyright owner or under the educational use licence in Part VB of the Act.

Under Part VB teachers can copy an electronic image, (or scan an image from hard copy) and incorporate it into their powerpoint slide or Blackboard subject page as long as access is restricted to Swinburne staff and students and the Part VB notice is displayed with the image.

Some copyright owners provide permission to use their images more widely through licences such as Creative Commons. Teachers might prefer to use such images outside the teaching context, such as on the open web or at conferences.

All images used must be properly referenced with information about the author and source appearing with the image.
